Hope that all of our amazing mom’s (even if you are mom to a cat, dog, rabbit, fish, etc - it all counts as love!) had the happiest of Mother’s Days yesterday. We had the following post put up on the Rock Star forums by one of our ‘Moms’…pretty cute!

This Mothers’ Day thing is starting to work pretty well now that my sons are older. My oldest son, who turns 24 on Wednesday, informed me that he was scheduled to work at Target on Mothers’ Day. I kindly replied there would be a stiff penalty for that!! LOL

Today, he brought home an early Mothers’ Day present, a pink ipod nano. I have no clue how to work it and never would have bought one for myself. I must have looked puzzled when he gave it to me. He told me he got it so I could listen to my OSI Rockstar teleseminars on my walks!!!

My other son, not to be outdone, told me to order a pink Flip video camera from Cindy for Mothers’ Day from him!! He told me I could take videos at eBay Live and then use them when teaching my eBay students. You gotta love brotherly competition!!

Now, how do I tell them I don’t like Pink!!! LOL Apparently, I’m not girly enough so they are buying me pink things. I wonder if its because for Mothers’ Day, I bought two tickets to a Giants baseball game in San Francisco! Alex and I will go since Tim is working. I just found out they are giving out PINK Giants baseball caps at the game for the first 20,000 fans. There is no escape.

Anyway, thanks Janelle and Cindy for being involved in my Mothers’ Day presents. I must talk about the both of you and unbelievably, they have been listening!!

One of my favorite entrepreneurs is Walt Disney whose love of drawing alone couldn’t fulfill his hopes and dreams. He knew that he had to surround himself with people who could make that dream a reality. Walt was humble enough and brilliant enough to not be a martyr in pursuing his dream, but thankful that there were people, talented enough to make him a Success.

Be mindful that you can’t do this yourself – there is a person/people, software, or company that will help you achieve your dreams. And always be thankful of those in your world that use their talents to make those dreams a reality for you. I just received this great email from one such person – although this is a thank you to many people in her life, it’s no less important AND it’s a brilliant use of YouTube. She has been actively using YouTube in promotion of her business for a while. I recommend subscribing to her YouTube channel to watch her marketing brilliance.

Don’t forget to thank those in your life who have helped get you to where you are now and where you are going tomorrow!

“Saving” money on legal fees - by Cliff Ennico

YEAH, BUT LOOK AT THE MONEY YOU SAVED . . .

I love the radio and television ads for a certain auto insurance company where someone is telling a friend his “tale of woe” – a laundry list of horrible things that has happened to the person – and the friend, after listening sympathetically, says, “well, yes, that’s too bad, but the good news is . . . I saved a ton of money on my auto insurance!”

Those ads, ladies and gentlemen, are my life. I’m getting a ton of e-mails these days from people who tried to save a few bucks in legal fees and found out – too late – what those bucks might have bought them. Here are a few:

“I registered my corporation in Nevada several years ago because I saw this great online ad telling me I could incorporate there for only $50. Last week I just got a letter from my state tax authority telling me I’m getting audited for income and sales taxes because I never registered my corporation with them. Can I just tell them to go away because I’m registered in Nevada?”

When you incorporate in another state, you still have to register your corporation in the state where you’re physically located and pay taxes there. Sadly, many of the “do it yourself” incorporation Websites don’t tell you that. Not only will you have to pay several years’ worth of taxes, with interest and penalties, but I predict you’ll be getting a similar letter very soon from your state Attorney General’s office accusing you of running an illegal business in your state.

But look on the bright side . . . you saved money in legal fees!

“I formed a limited liability company (LLC) several years ago with two other partners. My accountant set up the LLC, and told us we needed a lawyer to draft our partnership agreement. We figured we didn’t need one because all three of us got along pretty well. Now my two partners have moved to other states, leaving me to do all the work. Because we’re listed as equal partners on our LLC tax returns, they’re getting two-thirds of the profits, they’re not lifting a finger to help me, and they refuse to pay me a salary. Is there anything I can do about it at this point?”

Not a whole lot. Once someone becomes your partner, the only way you legally can get rid of them is to buy them out for a fair price. Without a written agreement, though, there’s nothing to force them to sell out to you. You are now their “Cinderella,” and the only thing you can do is quit the business yourself and let it die – a shame since it’s doing well.

But look on the bright side . . . you saved money in legal fees!

“I recently hired a sales representative. I needed an employment agreement in a hurry, so I downloaded one from a Website that specializes in legal contract forms. Well, now my business isn’t doing too great and I need to downsize this employee to cut costs. In reading the contract, though, it seems I can’t terminate this guy unless he commits a felony! Is there any way the law would throw out this contract and let me fire him?”

It actually works the other way – whenever there’s a written contract that’s more favorable to the employee than what the law allows, the courts will usually uphold the contract. While a lot of downloadable legal forms on the Web are pretty good, you still need a lawyer to look at them and “customize” the contract language.

But look on the bright side . . . you saved money in legal fees!

“I had to fire someone recently – my most senior employee. The exit interview went very well, he didn’t seem upset, I offered him a generous severance package which he accepted, and he signed a generic release form that my attorney drew up years ago when I first started the company. Now, three months later, he’s suing me for age discrimination! How the Devil can that happen after he signed a release?”

It can happen because under the federal Age Discrimination in Employment Act, a release of age discrimination claims must contain very specific language. For example, you have to give the terminated employee seven days to sign the release, and an additional 21 days to change his mind. A generic release doesn’t have these provisions.

But look on the bright side . . . you saved money in legal fees!

Nobody likes paying legal fees. But when you run your own business, they are a necessary cost of doing business. It always costs a lot less to prevent a problem from happening than it does to “fix” the problem once it happens. If you lose your business because you were too cheap to spend an hour of your attorney’s time, the fact you saved money won’t be a huge consolation.

Viral Marketing with Squidoo

There is nothing more amazing, I think, in the business world than Viral Marketing. The sheer success of the Blair Witch Project from almost a decade ago, came almost entirely from its ground-breaking Viral Marketing campaigns.

Viral Marketing’s definition is pretty simple – A marketing phenomenon that facilitates and encourages people to pass along a marketing message.

But how do you get that to happen? How do you create something that people want to share – basically becoming hundreds if not thousands of emailed salespeople for your business that you don’t have to pay? Well, you could scream and cry for people to leave Britney alone – that will definitely get passed around. You can write something controversial – that always gets people riled up to share (although not always in the way you want). You can create one of those annoying ‘read/do this and then scroll to the bottom and pass it on to 5 friends or you will have bad things happen to you’ email – lol. But in business, the easiest ways to create Viral Marketing is:

To provide valuable information that will solve a problem
And if you can do it with a sense of humor even better!

I was perusing different people’s blogs, Squidoo pages and other marketing ideas and happened upon a Squidoo page made by one of our recent OSI RS show guests – Mike Rozell.

His Squidoo page (appears like it’s his first one too) was SO funny I couldn’t stop laughing. I know from talking to my Real Estate friends that Mike’s lens topic is an issue that bugs many of them, yet he took the frustration out of it and made it hilarious…and he put it into terms that almost everyone can now relate too, not just real estate agents.

And now I am about to do what I am sure one of his original intentions was – pass it along for others to read.

Don’t cheat on your Realtor with me when buying a home

I like how he also asks for your advice with his lens at the bottom – you know that many of our brilliant Squidooers like Genius Giant Squid Stephanie is going to take that offer and run with it. Brilliant on Mike’s part – now he has the best of the best also helping him make his marketing even better! Heck, he could down the line even be up for Lens of the Day with the right networking.

Janieruth OK, I am not usually one to toot my own horn (NOT), but - this week I worked on my Bling! It and I finally got the hang of it. Still working out some of the edges, but all in all not too shabby.

ALSO, and I thought this day would never come, I got my first commission payment from Commission Junction. Yea! It was only $27.50, but that is money that eBay was not paying me before and I have a good bit in my hopper for next payday. Now, of course, the eBay changes will affect that, but the money will come from eBay instead of CJ. I was surprised to see how it starts to build.

So even though I am not at PowerSeller, I still Rock. (PS my sales are on track so I hope to make PS by eBay Live to be able to do PS things with y’all).
